MIRI: The freak storm that uprooted giant trees, blew off rooftops, bent metal signboards and left a trail of destruction in its path in northern Sarawak was caused by the "tail" of typhoon Ramasun that raged near the Philippines.
The Sarawak Meteorological Department on Wednesday said this tail-end of the typhoon is expected to linger around in the northern Borneo region, especially Miri and Limbang, until Saturday.
"The northern half of the state is feeling the effect of the tail-end of the typhoon. The typhoon carries very strong winds and creates very high waves.
"The wind is more than 50km per hour and the waves at least 4.5m in the South China Sea. We have issued warnings against travelling by small boats in the South China Sea offshore northern Borneo until Saturday at least," said the department.
Wednesday morning saw frantic efforts by people affected by the sudden freak storm to clean up and repair their homes. Many houses were affected, especially in the Tudan resettlement scheme and in the Piasau Malay kampung, while trees weighing tonnes along the Miri-Lutong highway and Pujut highway were uprooted. The Fire and Rescue Department received more than 40 reports of incidents related to the storm, but there were no major injuries.

Now this explains the dramatic weather changes that often take place at night.
No. I am not purposely typing this post in Itallic. For some reason, Blogger is not enabling me to switch back to normal font.
In situations like these, one would say that it is safer to be indoors.
However this situation does not apply to every home for sometimes home can be one of the most dangerous places to be.
2 colleagues living in the Tudan area had their house roofs blown off by the strong wind.
Imagine, turning in for the night after a day of work expecting to be able to get some rest in preparation for another routine tomorrow when debris suddenly starts pelting you as the roof is slowly lifted off and blown away.
Icey raindrops falling on you mercilessly after that. Miserable.
I asked mom if that situation would happen to us. I mean, who knows right? All things unpredictable might happen and it's better to take precaution sooner than later yea?
She shrugged and laugh. How very comforting. =.=
Anyway, take it from me. Do avoid going out at night for these couple of days. Just these couple of days.
Read Aizzat's blog to know more about the road conditions and all during this period.
Till then.
