Yesterday, I got back from work at around 4.15 pm. Upon arrival, I noticed a woman sitting at the bus stop, strategically located outside the house. Nothing unusual, yes? I proceeded to unlock the gate and drove my car into the compound. After locking the car, I was about to shut the gate when the woman suddenly approached me and spoke Foochow to me. Now, this was unusual.
The first thought that came to me was that this woman needed me to send her somewhere. Either that or she needed directions. Noticing the blur look on my face, she switched to chinese and asked if I had just gotten back from work. I said yes and she then asked if I was working in a bank. I wear a blazer to work which must have caused her confusion so I said no and told her I was a receptionist.
At this point, she strategically put her hand on my gate so as to stop me from shutting it. She then pulled out some papers placed in this transparent file and shoved it under my nose. It showed a copy of a birth certificate which belonged to her son and some photostated medical records.
Turns 0ut her son had Thalassemia Major, this genetic mutation disease which affects the blood. You can read more about this on the Net. Apparently, I've forgotten most of the things I've learnt in Biology so I only know this much. Thalassemia Major is the most dangerous form of Thalassemia.
So she started talking about her son and how he had a bloated stomach since young, how she had 5 children to fend for and so on. I knew where was this leading to but let her continue anyway. She then told me that she had been walking around the neighbourhood asking for donations to help her son. Some gave, and some didn't. Anyway, the point was, she was here to ask for donations. However, she kept going round and round, beating around the bushes.
So, after awhile, I took out my wallet from my bag and began to open it. I was quite apprehensive about giving since there were so many scams these days that cheat us good people from our money. Haha! Eventhough she saw me opening my wallet, she continued talking, often repeating the same thing which was rather annoying. I mean, if it were me, upon seeing the open wallet, I'd shut up, wait for the person to donate and thank him/her profusely. Now isn't that better?
I started pulling out RM 20 but then shoved it back into my wallet and closed it. Again, this woman was still going on and on. As she was talking, I saw my dad pull up and thought, "Yes, someone to save me!" Dad got out of the car and asked me what did the woman want. I told him about her story and dad simply told the woman that we were not interested in donating and shut the gate, causing the woman to remove her hand from it. I rushed into the house, feeling relieved that I was saved from such a situation.
Dad told me that I needn't donate since she didn't have enough proof about anything she said. And then he told me next time, I shouldn't even bother listening to anything these people tell me in case I get conned or something. Ah well. I shall do that, provided that no one puts their hand protectively on the gate ever again.

The boy in the picture above is Daniel, Jessica's younger brother. You can see the resemblance in both of them, eh?
Daniel was telling me that he felt 'terabai' in the previous post since he was also present at Jess's house during baking day and came into the kitchen for a few gossip sessions. Haha. Very sorry yea, Daniel. I did not take any pics that had you inside hence, I did not blog about you. However, it was fun having you around to gossip and hear you and Jess have sibling banter which was entertaining. Owh yes, thanks for reversing the car to a strategic location. =D
Anyway, half this post is dedicated to you, Mr Daniel Lim, brother of darling Jessica and a good friend =D. Haha.
Okayla. Till then.
